A youth action-focused space for the 2022 Online Conference:

Youth and Planetary Health:
Sustainable Collaboration for the Future

09th-13th September, 2022

About YHACK22

YHack22 looks to foster interprofessional and multisectoral collaboration for youth-led solutions in Planetary Health. Emergent and novel zoonotic infectious diseases find their origins in animals, but its principal drivers subtend from human activities at human-animal-ecosystem interfaces. Urbanisation and expansion into new geographic areas facilitates close contact with wild and domestic animals. Deforestation and intensive agricultural practices have disrupted ecosystems and climates, providing new opportunities for pathogens to pass to animals. International trade and travel have further led to the increasing globalization of health risks. Rigorous interpretation of disease dynamics is needed to undertake risk assessments and develop appropriate response and control plans for global health security. Effective management of Planetary Health issues necessitates the breaking down of barriers for more integrated operational initiatives between human and veterinary medicine and ecological and environmental sciences. Furthermore, equitable solutions to infectious disease challenges need to reflect the disproportionate disease burdens carried by marginalised and vulnerable communities.

In response, YHack22 serves as a platform to unite youth problem-solvers of connected  sectors in Planetary Health to develop viable solutions and actionable initiatives for communities closest to them. By fostering heavily-engaged collaboration, the one-week hackathon aims to catalyze an initial breaking down of sectoral silos and encourage analysis of connected stakeholder needs to drive sustainable solutions that can scale. Using the GHWN Youth Hub 2022 Annual Conference as a springboard for considerate discussions, YHack22 further aims to raise awareness of issues in Planetary Health that matter most to young health professionals.
